Supper

(3 Fashanos 5115: The Landing)

“There’s food …” and he nodded to the table.

I already smelled the delicious salmon, but someone else was sitting at the table. Truth be told, even if there was not, I would still have waited for his invitation. I always do.

I look forward to quiet dinners, but they seem to be more difficult to find of late. Tonight’s star was the wrapped and steamed salmon, which practically melts in your mouth. I honestly think someone could become addicted to it, it is that good.

Tonight there was also hearty fresh-baked acorn and sweet potato bread, the perfect compliment to this simple supper.

Small talk ensued. He listened, patiently, I think. I had a particularly difficult day with a string of bad news about potential new hunting areas, and I was working at not feeling discouraged.

As a huge lightning storm raged outside from inland to the Bay, he suggested staying with my current hunting area for a bit longer, stretching it out. The next promotion might make moving on around the Landing much easier.

“It is the least bitter medicine,” I told him and nodded. Faced with moving, hunting the undead, joining some Society, or only being able to hunt with someone’s assistance, it was looking like quite the best decision.

With supper over, I thought about stalling the inevitable and staying indoors to practice on my instruments. But … I probably did need to know how tedious hunting the same area was going to be after yesterday’s promotion.

So I drew a deep breath, stood up, and started singing my spellsongs.

“Would you like to come with, or do you need to remain here?” I asked him. He stood up and joined me. Off we headed on this small adventure of information gathering.
